Winter Fuel Payment 2024-2025: What You Need to Know

03 October 2024

Winter Fuel Payment 2024-2025: What You Need to Know

As winter approaches, it's time to ensure you're ready to keep warm! If you were born before 23 September 1958, you could receive between £200 and £300 to help cover heating costs this season through the Winter Fuel Payment. This essential support is available for those who meet specific criteria, so let’s break down how to claim and what to expect.

Who's Eligible?

You’re eligible if:

  • Born before 23 September 1958
  • Living in England or Wales
  • Receiving one of the following benefits during the qualifying week (16-22 September 2024):
    • Pension Credit
    • Universal Credit
    • Income-related ESA or JSA
    • Income Support
    • Child or Working Tax Credit

Even if you live abroad, you may still qualify, so it’s worth checking!

Not Eligible?

Unfortunately, you won't be eligible if:

  • You live in Scotland
  • You’ve been in hospital for free treatment for over 12 months
  • You were in prison during the qualifying week
  • You've been living in a care home from 24 June to 22 September 2024

Special Consideration for Care Home Residents

If you're in a care home but receive certain benefits and have lived there for less than 13 weeks during the qualifying period, you may still qualify!

How Much Can You Receive?

  • If you live alone: £200 (born between 23 September 1944 and 22 September 1958) or £300 (born before 23 September 1944)
  • If you live with someone: £200 or £300, depending on birth dates
  • In a care home: £200 or £300 based on your age

When Will You Get Paid?

Payments will typically arrive in November or December 2024, with most being paid automatically. Look out for a letter confirming your payment details. If you haven’t received your payment by 29 January 2025, it’s important to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

Need Help?

If you’re unsure about your eligibility or haven’t received your payment by January 2025, get in touch with the Winter Fuel Payment Centre for assistance:
